What is the earliest time we can check in?

It is possible to check in almost any time of the day or night. If our office is closed then we can make arrangements to leave a key out for you and directions to your room so if you are arriving late you are still able to stay here.

Our office hours are 8am - 1pm and 3pm thru to 9pm. If you check in before 12pm your room may not be ready but we are happy for you to put your lugguage in storage and use our facilities until your room is ready.

What time is check out? Can we stay around if we have a later bus to catch?

In summer check out is 10am.  If you need to wait around for a bus we are happy for you to put your lugguage in storage and be around the hostel til your bus arrives (no extra charges for that). Just remember to get your backpack out of storage though if you are leaving during our lunch hour.  In winter we are able to offer a later sleepin check out time of 11am.

How far are you from the town centre?

The main street is at the end of our road. It is about a 7 min walk into town. We think we have a pretty good spot being so close to town but not right in it as it can be noisy particularly in the weekends.

Are we able to leave luggage whilst we go hiking/kayaking?

Yes no problem and this is FREE of charge. We have a locked lugguage room and safe for smaller valuables.

Are we able to leave our car in your car park whilst we walk the Abel Tasman?

Yes this is usually fine. In consideration for others at really busy times of the year we wouldn’t want it left for too long though.

Is the hostel suitable for children?

Yes we are more than happy to have children staying here.  Though we think our hostel has a very friendly atmosphere it is not a big boozy, party hostel. We have a huge variety of ages staying here and kids are just a part of that.   Obviously like everyone of all ages we just ask that you are respectful to others in terms of noise particularly at times when others might want to be be sleeping.

Do you accept Groups?

With its large, well-equipped communal areas, relaxed feel and purpose built nature, our hostel is great for groups. We have many groups who enjoy our hostel and return year after year. We particularly welcome groups from April through to early December. Depending on the age and requirements of the groups we may suggest or offer you the sole use of the hostel. There are times of the year, in consideration for our other guests when it is not appropriate for us to accept large groups.

For all groups we are happy to organise and book activities, meals out etc. Just let us know in advance and we can make suggestions. Once you arrive we are happy to make actual bookings for you. Here in town there are lots of great things Groups to do when not playing games or whatever they are here for – climbing wall, bead gallery, hydro & sack slide, indoor roller-blading etc.. etc.
Depending on the time of year we may also be able to offer a special Group rate.

Can I work for accommodation?

Yes we always have travellers who work for accommodation and they also get a free breakfast when it’s on, free laundry morning teas, chocolate pudding and ice cream nightly and other bonuses for being part of our team. Please email us if you are interested and we’ll let you know if we have space. .

If I get a job and want to stay long-term do you take long-termers?

This really depends on what you are doing and how long you want to stay.  We are cautious of having too many long-s termers as it can affect the atmosphere for others.  We are primarily a hostel for independent travellers but having said that we sometimes have people staying who are doing an internship at the hospital or vet clinic or just like our hsotel and get a job and stay for awhile.

Can your front desk staff help me with ways to find work?

Our staff keep themselves up-to-date with Backpacker work that is on offer.  Just ask and we can give you some ideas.

Do you have a weekly rate?

We have a few rooms set aside in quieter months that are for those that want to stay more than a few days and we are happy to offer a weekly rate. Again best to email or phone us to check availability.

Is linen and towels supplied in all rooms?

The doubles & twins are fully made up and we supply sheets & duvets for the dorm beds. Extra duvets, pillows and blankets are also available at no cost (we want you to be warm & very comfortable). Doubles & twins have towels in their rooms and for dorms we supply on request.

What sort of people stay at Tasman Bay Backpackers?

All different nationalities, ages & cultures stay at our Backpackers. It is mostly independent travellers who are attracted to our hostels but we do also cater for large Groups (particularly in the quieter times).     We have a great respect for all different nationalities and cultures and for the environment.  We like to think that the people who choose to stay feel the same way.
